How Did We Get Here?

Dominion Energy has created an energy ‘crisis by contract.’ The State Corporation Commission and General Assembly took a hands-off approach, allowing individual municipalities to approve data center proposals without oversight or understanding of the impacts on statewide electrical infrastructure and other natural resource needs.

Dominion Energy then entered into contracts to supply power to tech companies, like Amazon, Google and Microsoft, behind closed doors. In those contracts, they agreed to provide power well beyond what they generate in Virginia or have transmission capacity to import from other states. Dominion’s recent Integrated Resource Plan (IRP) projects a cost of more than $100 billion to build out the generation, transmission and storage needed to match the growth.

This negatively impacts all Virginia ratepayers, including families, farms, small businesses and others who pay an electric bill.

ABOUT US

Virginians for a Smarter Digital Future is a coalition of citizens, families, employers, business associations, and non-profit groups, including The Piedmont Environmental Council, who care deeply about the viability of our state’s economic and environmental future.

We believe legislators and regulators need to be smarter about how we build our state’s digital infrastructure. We need more transparency and a deeper understanding of the long-term impacts of both the siting and operation of data centers.  It is time for the Virginia General Assembly, State Corporation Commission and the Commission on Electric Utility Regulation to do their jobs and hold Dominion Energy and the data center industry accountable.
